A shocking assault by the sand mafia has come to light in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, where the additional tehsildar of Kaptipada, Bhimakanta Majhi, was attacked near the Suno river bed. The sand mafia allegedly assaulted Majhi while he was en route to stop illegal sand lifting operations on Monday morning. He sustained injuries on his hand and other parts of his body and is currently receiving treatment at Kaptipada hospital.
The incident occurred around 4 am after Majhi received a tip-off about illegal sand mining using an excavator. When his driver didn’t respond, the officer drove alone towards the site. On his way, a group of miscreants allegedly linked to the sand mafia intercepted him near Katas. Following a heated argument, they assaulted him in an attempt to block his inspection.
Majhi managed to flee towards Kaptipada police station, but the attackers pursued him, pelting stones and vandalizing his car. Both windshields were shattered, and the vehicle sustained major damage. Upon reaching the station, Majhi rushed inside to safety.
A case has been filed, and the police have launched an investigation to identify the culprits. The sand mafia’s brazen violence underscores the dangers faced by officials combating illegal mining activities.
